As an undergraduate, Zulifya worked as an Assistant for the Education Project of the Aga Khan Foundation. She received the Open Society Scholarship to support her Masters studies at Columbia University. Zulfiya returned to Tajikistan and worked on United Nations Development Programme projects and with the German Agency for Technical Cooperation (GTZ) as a National Coordinator on Social Protection Component, engaging government institutions and international and non-governmental organisations to mainstream the interests of people living below the poverty line in Tajikistan while reforming the system.
She has also worked for the Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) as a Program Manager, Gender Based Violence and Social Protection (2007 to 2010) and was a Qualitative Researcher in Gender based violence at the University of Exeter, UK from 2010 until 2015.
