Asel’s master’s thesis focused on labor migrations of the Kyrgyz population to Russia and related policy, following the significant collapse of socialist economy in Kyrgyzstan. She has published and presented her findings broadly. Asel created the Research Group on Central Asia at the Center for the Studies of International Relations (CERI) in Paris, to promote research on Central Asia. Her research interests include the development of the Kyrgyz state and society, with a focus on understanding the cycles of democratization, stagnation and authorization of Kyrgyz politics.
