Kanykei attended an Art Management programme at Indiana University, USA In 2006, Kanykei established the annual international Bishkek Jazz Festival. As Art Director of the Public Foundation Central Asian Arts Management (CAAM), she facilitated the publication of an anthology on Kyrgyz traditional music. Previously, she was an intern at Folkway Records of the Smithsonian Institution. She also served as the Arts and Culture Programme Manager at the Swiss Cooperation Office. Her research interests include the cultural music of Central Asia, specifically ethno-jazz and opera, cultural identity in post-Soviet Central Asian Republics and arts management in nonprofit cultural organisations in Kyrgyzstan.
