Asel’s master’s thesis focused on labor migrations of the Kyrgyz population to Russia and related policy enactments, following a significant collapse of the socialist economy in Kyrgyzstan. She has published and presented her findings broadly. Asel created the Research Group on Central Asia at the Center for the Studies of International Relations (CERI) in Paris, to promote comparative research on Central Asia. Her research interests include the development of the Kyrgyz state and society, with a focus on understanding the cycles of democratisation, stagnation and authorisation of Kyrgyz politics. Recently, she was a Graduate Teaching/Research Assistant in Politics and International Relations at the University of Exeter’s Department of Politics and International Relations.
