Join the University of Central Asia's (UCA)'s Summer Upgrading Camp 2019, a three-week residential academic enrichment camp from July 1-19 2019 for talented Grade 9 and 10 students living in Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan (2020 and 2021 graduates).

Held at UCA's Campuses in Naryn, Kyrgyzstan (Grade 9 students) and Khorog, Tajikistan (Grade 10 students), this upgrading camp offers great opportunities to improve your English, Math and Science skills and receive critical support to enter the university you want. This is also a unique opportunity to experience a world class campus and learn from highly qualified faculty.

Am I eligible?

The Summer Upgrading Camp is open to all current Grade 9 and 10 students living in Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan. The Admissions process is merit-based.

How do I apply?

To gain admission, you must submit an online application including (1) motivation letter and (2) your current school grades.

The deadline to apply for the 2019 camp is April 30th 2019 at 11:59 pm (GMT+6).

Shortlisted candidates will be invited to sit for an English language placement test. Test centres and other details will be provided on May 8th 2019 by e-mail.

Selected participants will be required to present a medical certificate of health. UCA requires students to adhere to a policy of academic honesty when applying.

Where will the UCA Summer Upgrading Camp be held?

The 2019 Summer Upgrading Camp will be hosted at two locations in 2019:

Students, faculty and staff will be accommodated at the University of Central Asia's state-of-the-art residences and provided with three meals a day and tea breaks.

The Naryn campus is located 2,000 meters above sea level on the banks of the Naryn River, and nestled near the Tian Shan Mountain range, and the campus in Tajikistan is located in Khorog, 2,100 metres above sea level in the Pamir mountains.

UCA's Summer Upgrading Camp will offer a fully residential experience, where living and studying among fellow students and faculty facilitates learning and educational experiences. Students will have the chance to experience a world class campus, where our current undergraduate programmes are being offered.

How will I spend my time?

Building English, Math and Science skills
Students will receive 50 hours of English, 35 hours of mathematics and 15 hours of science lessons. The UCA Summer Upgrading Camp curriculum is designed by international educational experts and adapted to fit the needs of Central Asian students. The goal is to upgrade students to attain internationally competitive levels in English and math and ensure they are ready for a world-class university education.

Engage in non-academic activities
Other activities will be organised in English, giving participants an opportunity to practice their new skills. Activities will be offered such as sports, debating, drama, networking with university professors and excursions to explore lakes and national parks in Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan.

Who will teach me?

A regional and international team of experienced and engaging teachers will teach classes at the UCA Summer Upgrading Camps. UCA Faculty have extensive experience teaching English as a Second Language (ESL). The Mathematics instructors are experienced in Central Asia and will ensure participants improve their grasp of mathematical concepts as well as problem solving skills.

Trained camp counsellors from Central Asia and across the globe will coordinate non-academic camp activities and provide supervision. Counsellors will assist students in improving their English skills and encouraging personal development.

What will I gain after completing the Summer Upgrading Camp?

In addition to new skills, a great experience and a personal mentor, all participants will receive a UCA certificate of participation for attending the camp.

How much does it cost?

The Summer Upgrading Camp fee is heavily subsidised by UCA and offered at $325*, which can be paid in national currencies:

  • Tajikistan: 3,070 TJS
  • Kyrgyzstan: 22,600 KGS
  • Kazakhstan: 122,500 KZT

Transportation from designated pick up locations to and from the Naryn and Khorog campuses is provided by UCA, as well as accommodation and meals.

Is it safe?

The UCA Campus provides a high level of security and is committed to providing campers with a safe experience. Participants benefit from 24-hour security and in-house access to medical care. They will also be under the constant supervision of a teacher, counsellor, or camp administrator.

How will I get there?

Transportation will be provided from designated pick up points in Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan to Naryn (Kyrgyzstan) and Khorog (Tajikistan).

Pick-up locations will be announced in the application form. Students across Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan are encouraged to apply (but will be required to travel to their nearest pick-up location at their own cost).

When do I need to be available?

UCA's Summer Upgrading Programme will be held in July 2019.
