My name is Heather Sherlock and I am from Vancouver, Canada. I am currently pursuing my Master's degree in Urban Planning & Environment at RMIT University in Melbourne, Australia, after having finished my first degree in International Development and Globalisation at the University of Ottawa in Canada last year. I am really enjoying my studies, and hope to work on urban sustainability issues in the future. I love living overseas, and in my spare time I like to travel as much as possible to experience new cultures and meet new people. I love being outdoors, so hiking and kayaking are two of my favourite activities. When I am not busy studying, I also love to read and recently I have started embroidery as well. This will be my second time at the UCA Summer Upgrading Camp. After an amazing experience last year, I am so excited to get back to Central Asia for another successful year.

I'm back! Hi, my name is Davis Cooper and I live in Vienna, Austria. I have been a camp counsellor at the UCA Summer Upgrading Camp multiple times in the past and I am excited as always for this years camp. About myself, I graduated from a multimedia and design school in 2009 and worked as a web designer for a while before starting my work in a kindergarten and as a camp counselor at different camps within Austria and abroad. I have been to university to study biology, astronomy and medicine, but I cut my studies short after two years to pursue the before mentioned jobs. In my spare time I like to go running, swimming and many other outdoor activities, but I also enjoy playing strategic computer games, playing chess, watching movies and writing reviews. I have been fortunate enough to travel to many places and have regularly visited my uncle and his family in Tajikistan and now in Bishkek. After all the camps I have been at I still get a little nervous and excited every year since every year is different and I get to meet a ton of new people. I am looking forward to meeting all of you! Dr Jalalidin Jaenbai
Hi all! My name is Dr Jalalidin Jaenbai and I am originally from Kyrgyzstan. I work as an Associate Professor at Zayed University in Dubai. Previously, I studied and worked in many countries, having taught Mathematics for two decades in Kyrgyzstan, and seven years at universities in the United States. I also love travelling, reading books, and hiking. I am excited and looking forward to meeting you – young people of my home region. We will do a lot of math, and have a lot of fun. See you soon!
My name is Anna Macegoniuk and I have been working as an Academic Lecturer in Business, Economics and Marketing in Central China for the past three years. Previously, I lived and worked in Northern England and West coast of Scotland for almost four years. I have taught English in Southeast Asia and the Caucasus, and have also both studied or worked in 12 European and Asian countries, including posts at Polish Embassies in Iran and Ukraine. I hold a Masters Degree in International Relations with a specialty in the former USSR from the Polish University of Adam Mickiewicz. My thesis covered the Gulag policy, which concerned Central Asia as well. This will be my second time in Naryn and Kyrgyzstan and I can speak Russian. I studied in Bishkek for one semester in 2009 through the European Commission scholarship. From my experience in Europe and Asia, I will be able to answer your questions on many academic or work-related issues during the camp.
Hello everyone! My name is Nigina Noebshoeva and I am from Khorog, Tajikistan. This will be my second year teaching at UCA’s Summer Upgrading Camp. Last year, we all had an amazing time and I believe we will also enjoy it this summer. I am an English Instructor at UCA’s School of Professional and Continuing Education where I have worked for 12 years. Prior to joining UCA, my professional career began at the Aga Khan Health Services (AKHS) in 2000. I held different positions such as English Instructor, Senior English Instructor and an Administrator of the Nursing Development Project. I have attended numerous professional development trainings at SPCE, which have enabled me to teach various high level certified programmes such as Business English, and English for Academic and Specific Purposes courses. At SPCE, I run IELTS test preparation sessions, teach English for Academic Purposes, as well as IELTS for postgraduate students of the Institute of Ismaili Studies. I also develop curricula for different programmes, conduct Teaching Knowledge Test sessions, and lead professional development trainings for Instructors from all districts of the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Oblast. This year, I have been appointed as a Cambridge KET, PET and FCE speaking examiner.
LECTURER OF ENGLISH, KHOROG CAMPUS
My name is Tojiniso Olimnazarova and I am an English Faculty member with UCA's undergraduate preparatory programme. I bring over 18 years of English language teaching experience to UCA. Before joining UCA, I lectured in Discourse Analysis at the Khorog State University. I was also Academic English instructor and Curriculum Development and Assessment Coordinator with the Khorog English and Preparatory Programme. I then joined UCA's School of Professional and Continuing Education (SPCE), Khorog as a Senior English Instructor and taught Conversational English, Business English and English for Academic Purposes. I developed curriculum and delivered professional development courses for English instructors at SPCE Khorog and its Afghanistan Learning Centres. Recently, I taught Academic Reading and IELTS for SPCE and the Institute of Ismaili Studies Postgraduate Preparatory Programme. My research interests include teacher development, using students' linguistic repertoire for teaching English as a foreign language and developing the critical thinking and analytical capacity of students. I hold a Certificate to Teach English Language to Adults (CELTA) from the University of Cambridge and completed courses in linguistics, language training and teacher training from world renowned universities. I also hold a Master's degree in Education (TEFL) with Distinction from University of Birmingham, United Kingdom and a Bachelor of Arts in Linguistics with Distinction from Khorog State University.
My name is Samat Turdumamatov, and I am PhD Candidate and Research Fellow at the National Academy of Sciences of the Kyrgyz Republic. I hold Masters of Science and Bachelor of Science degrees in Engineering from Gaziantep University in Turkey. My research interests include electromagnetic waves and antennas. I have actively collaborated with researchers in several other disciplines at the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey. I also spent four years as a Faculty Member with appointments in physics and mathematics. I continue to enjoy successful and creative journey into the arena of mathematics, and I am eager to share my educational experiences with all who have a passion for learning and a yearning to grow.
Hi everyone! My name is Zaanish and I am from the Windy City, Chicago, Illinois. I graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Finance from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Upon graduation, I joined a rotational finance development programme at a large biotechnology firm. I also have experience in the ever-evolving financial technology industry. I enjoy providing advice, guidance, and mentorship to all kinds of people, and hope to bring a fun and positive experience for all the camp participants. My favorite activities include hiking and travelling. I am fortunate to have lived on multiple continents, and even on an island, for long periods of time. As an avid hiker, I have visited over twenty National Forests/Parks across the globe and have hiked well over a couple hundred miles. My passion for traveling and connecting with people from all around the world has made me realise my deep interest in global affairs. I am looking forward to attend UCA's Summer Upgrading Camp in Naryn to build on this interest and passion, share knowledge, learn new things and meet new people. I cannot wait to meet each one of you, and I am hoping for the best camp experience this year.
My name is Zuhali Suhrob and I am from Khorog, Tajikistan. In 2017, I graduated from the Aga Khan Academy in Mombasa, Kenya and completed the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme. Currently I am pursuing an Honours Degree in International Development Studies at York University in Toronto, Canada. A key factor in choosing my degree is due to my keen interest in human rights, political and social development, and learning languages. My love for languages has already allowed me to become multilingual in English, Tajik, Russian, Shughni (mother tongue), a little bit of Swahili and I am currently learning Italian and French. I have a passion for volunteering and youth development, and enjoy reading, debating, public speaking, dancing, hiking, gym classes and traveling. I love food and over the last year, residing in Canada, my palate has been exposed to fusion food that is very new and enjoyable. This is my first time as a camp counsellor at UCA Summer Upgrading Camp, and I am very eager to meet you all. I am excited to engage in cross-cultural exchange and broaden my knowledge. Hello! My name is Sunaira. I am driven by my passion to work with children with various abilities, which led me to pursue my Bachelor of Science Degree in Psychology. I worked in research for about a year before deciding to further my studies in Inclusive Education. During my degree, I had the opportunity to travel to Vietnam through the Teaching Across Borders programme, where I worked in both an elementary and high school. I have caught the travel bug, and am excited and ready to explore Kyrgyzstan. When I am not in school or working, I take advantage of the beautiful Rockies here in Alberta, Canada by going on hikes, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing in the winter. I also enjoy kickboxing and hanging out with friends. I am incredibly excited to be a part of this year's UCA Summer Upgrading Camp!

ASSISTANT CAMP COUNSELLOR
My name is Nekbakht Alibekova and I was born and raised in Khorog, Tajikistan. Since the age of 12, I have been studying at the Aga Khan Academy, Mombasa in Kenya. In one way or another, I always find myself involved in the sphere of education, whereby I try to give back as much knowledge as I gain. Thus, serving communities has become an essential part of my life. I have worked with “Football Our Hope” – a group of street boys aged between 15 and 25 who are learning to use football as a platform for communication. I am also a residential captain to girls between the ages of 11 to 14. Similarly, I am frequently engaged in planning and being the Master of Ceremonies at events including the Roof of The World, Aga Khan Music Initiative – Asian Night and TEDx events. One of my hobbies is writing personal pieces because it amuses me how using only 26 letters, we can vividly express ourselves with distinct and powerful words. I enjoy going on expedition trips, practicing yoga and recently I joined rugby and boxing. On another note, finding a home away from home has allowed me to become more open-minded in terms of understanding my role in a diverse community, and most of all respecting different people with their varying perspectives and beliefs. At the UCA Summer Camp of 2018, I hope to share my experience with the students and leave behind a positive energy.

My name is Aigerim Dzhaanbaeva and I am from Naryn, Kyrgyzstan. I am 18 years old and currently studying Economics at the University of Central Asia (UCA). I studied Grade 10 in Columbus, Ohio and am alumna of Future Leaders Exchange Programme (FLEX'16). Since then, I have volunteered at different language camps and events such as ACCESS, GLOW-TUBE and the World Nomad Games. In addition, I was a student body president in high school, and in my last year, I taught English to children at the American Corner in Naryn. I enjoy playing tennis and chess, and in my free time, I also like playing piano and taking photos. I love travelling and believe that travel will make you an incredibly more well-rounded human being. I am a very open-minded person and I like being surrounded by different people from various parts of the world. I will do my best to bring a positive impact at Sumer Upgrading Camp. Hi everyone! My name is Nadira and I am from Kyrgyzstan. I graduated from Osh "Sebat" Girls High school. Currently I am an undergraduate student at UCA majoring in Earth and Environmental Sciences and minoring in Computer Science. Within two years at UCA, I joined different clubs and helped planning, organising and executing different events such as health fairs, carnivals and open houses. I enjoy exploring different cultures (I speak seven languages), dancing and reading books. This is my second time at the UCA Summer Upgrading Camp, and I hope that we will all have fun and enjoy our time together!

Hello, my name is Jamilya and I was born and raised in Karatau, Kazakhstan. I graduated from the Kazakh-Turkish high school in 2017. This year, I completed my preparatory year at UCA majoring in Communications and Media and minoring in Economics. Prior to studying at UCA, I participated in different international competitions held in several countries such as Germany and Turkey. I am passionate about math and learning new languages. I can speak Kazakh, Russian, English, Turkish and this year I also learnt Kyrgyz. I really like singing, playing the piano, and from my childhood I was recognised with several awards in these fields. I love playing volleyball with my classmates at UCA. I also participated in Summer Upgrading Camp in 2016, and hope that all my experiences will help me to cooperate well with all of you. I am looking forward to getting know each of you, and spending an unforgettable time at the Summer Upgrading Camp 2018.

My name is Aleksey Lee and I am majoring in Computer Science at UCA in Naryn, Kyrgyz Republic. In high school, my studies were dedicated to the history and literature of America and the Great Britain, preparation for the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) and translation techniques. I would describe myself as an enthusiastic, industrious, responsible and creative person. Since my teenage years, I have been interested in basketball, cross-fit, photography, video editing, singing and drawing. Besides that, I am passionate about helping and guiding people, which develops my abilities to communicate and engage with people. Over the last two years, I contributed to the Naryn community by working in the Service Learning Project that was held at UCA, and aimed to teach orphans English language and mathematics. Moreover, I also participated in UCA's Winter Upgrading Programme in 2018. Having a strong knowledge of English language and mathematics, backed by the experience I have gained in the last years of my school and university studies, I am looking forward to work at the Summer Upgrading Camp 2018 and make it memorable for all participants.

My name is Aminulloh (Amin) Mamadziyoev and I was born and raised in Khorog, Tajikistan. I am 17 years old. I am currently studying at the Aga Khan Academy in Mombasa (AKAM) in Kenya. It has been five years since I moved to AKAM in 2012 from the Aga Khan Lycee in Khorog. During my free time, I go to the gym, and spend most of my time with my friends, and learning new things from them. Most of my friends come from different backgrounds, religions and have different opinions about things, so most of the time we discuss debated topics, which is quite intriguing. I am also a big fan of soccer and basketball, like reading comic books, and am huge fan of the marvel cinematic. Finally, I am looking forward to seeing everybody at the Summer Upgrading Camp!

My name is Malika Mirzoshoeva and I am a preparatory student at UCA. Throughout my life, I have been in the pursuit of knowledge and learning diverse cultures and backgrounds. I am a graduate of Aga Khan Lycee School and over the past three years, I participated in various summer programmes including the Global Encounters in Kenya and Summer School for 10th graders in Naryn, Kyrgyzstan. These programmes gave me a priceless experience. I have learned to become independent, responsible and very communicative person, who respects people of different backgrounds. I am also very enthusiastic in doing volunteer work and community service, and have carried out environmental cleaning projects in my district. I have played in a basketball team at my school for more than three years and have learned to become a very disciplined and reliable person. I am very much looking forward to contribute to the Summer Upgrading Camp, by sharing and gaining experience and I believe I will make an excellent networking while being a part of such a great program.

My name is Alidovar Sodatsairov, I was born in Dasht village in Ishkashim and studied there till 6th grade. From 7th grade I came to Khorog town and finished eleventh grade in School named Nasir Khosrow. After finishing school, I got an opportunity to go for an exchange year to US with the program called FLEX. Currently I am studying in the University of Central Asia and majoring in Earth and Environmental Sciences. Since the time when I got involved with international programs I started to value the concept of learning and tried to give out as much as I learned. I try to give out and help my community as much as I can with volunteering in different events and places. I frequently help some students with their English language skills, volunteer at an NGO Umedvor and few others. Moreover, leaving far from my parents for six years now taught me to be more patient in terms of working with different people. Flexibility and more open-minded towards the problems and divers communities taught me to understand the world better and see the beauty of pluralism with my own eyes. I hope to share my experience and knowledge with the students at UCA Summer Camp 2018.
