Subjective Approaches to Measuring Resilience

The Mountain Societies Research Institute of the University of Central Asia (MSRI / UCA) offers an analytical document entitled «Subjective approaches to measuring resilience in Kyrgyzstan", developed on the basis of the results of a study in Kyrgyzstan within the framework of the PRISE project. The project was implemented by the MSRI together with the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE).

The Brief provides a detailed description of a new innovative tool for measuring the resilience of rural households to extreme events and natural disasters. The tool was developed within the framework of the PRISE project using a subjective approach. The research shows that subjective resilience questions act as strong predictors of future food security of households. This approach may help to accurately identify who is most at risk whilst significantly decreasing the length of the surveys.

The use of this research tool can be useful for organizations involved in practical aspects of planning, implementing and / or analyzing field research on food security, adaptation to climate change and development.
