Central Asia Exceeds Global Suicide Rate
A 30-year literature review on suicide in Central Asia was presented at a Public Lecture organised by the University of Central Asia’s Cultural Heritage and Humanities Unit (CHHU) in Dushanbe (Tajikistan) on July 3rd. The lecture on Suicide in Central Asia: A Systematic Study of Risk and Protective Factors was delivered by Shahnaz Savani, Lecturer of Social Work at the University of Houston-Downtown (USA).

Second Summer School on Learning Landscapes Kicks Off at UCA
The Mountain Societies Research Institute (MSRI) of the University of Central Asia's (UCA) and the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) began its Second Summer School on ‘Learning Landscapes through Environmental Research and Monitoring” on July 3rd at UCA for 22 undergraduate and master’s students from Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan.

Boosting Tourism Development in Tekeli
The University of Central Asia’s (UCA) School of Professional and Continuing Education (SPCE) conducted a training for 25 tour guides in Tekeli (Kazakhstan) from June 25th to July 3rd 2019. Participants completed 72 hours of training, including both practical and theoretical knowledge, and was aimed at developing internal and external tourism services in the region.

The University of Central Asia’s (UCA) Education Improvement Programme (EIP) conducted professional development sessions for 59 teachers from English and Russian medium schools in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan from June 13-21 at UCA’s Naryn campus.

Kyrgyz Labour Market Not Ready for Growing Youth Population
Research at the University of Central Asia (UCA) has highlighted several areas that require immediate attention to mitigate high unemployment among youth in Kyrgyzstan. UCA’s Institute of Public Policy and Administration (IPPA) presented the findings of an assessment study on the “Labour Market for Youth in Kyrgyzstan” on June 20th 2019 in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. The event brought together representatives of state ministries and agencies, international organisations, and non-governmental organisations.

“Naryn-Syr Darya: Three Stories of the River”
The University of Central Asia’s Cultural Heritage and Humanities Unit (CHHU) in collaboration with Tubingen University, organised a two-week workshop in June at the Naryn campus for artists and a research project team to develop futuristic concepts of peaceful coexistence of the Naryn - Syr Darya river and the social life of people.

Rare Minerals Donated to UCA
Dr. Farrukh Iskandarov, mineralogist with the Main Department of Geology of the Republic of Tajikistan visited the UCA Khorog campus in June. He toured the campus facilities, became acquainted with the construction of the Geology Lab, and met with Dr. Diana Pauna, Dean of UCA’s School of Arts and Sciences, and Dr. David Rodgers, UCA’s Fulbright Scholar and Visiting Faculty of Earth and Environmental Sciences at UCA. During the visit, Dr. Iskandarov donated a microscope (valued at $1,500) and rare minerals to UCA.

Experts Discuss Industrial and Technological Priorities in Kyrgyzstan
The fourth in a series of development dialogues gathered leading experts, representatives of international organisations, as well as state ministries and agencies of Kyrgyzstan to discuss “Industrial and Technological Development of Kyrgyzstan”. The half-day development dialogue took place in Bishkek on June 24th, and was co-organised by the United Nations system in Kyrgyzstan and the University of Central Asia’s (UCA) Institute of Public Policy and Administration (IPPA). These dialogues support work on a long-term national policy on key development issues for Kyrgyzstan.
