Afghan students pursue advanced English and IT training at UCA, Khorog
Twelve young learners from the rural areas of Afghan Badakhshan and Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Oblast (GBAO), Tajikistan arrived at the University of Central Asia’s (UCA), School of Professional and Continuing Education (SPCE) in Khorog, Tajikistan to pursue advanced courses in English and Information Technology (IT) in October 2012.

University of Central Asia celebrates 10th anniversary of the International Year of Mountains on International Mountain Day
The University of Central Asia (UCA) supported the ‘market place for sustainable mountain development good practices,’ organised by the Mountain Partnership Secretariat (MPS) Central Asia Hub, celebrating International Mountain Day 2012, which also marked the 10th anniversary of the International Year of Mountains.

UCA Senior Research Fellow appointed Foreign Member of Academy of Sciences, Republic of Tajikistan
The University of Central Asia’s (UCA) Senior Research Fellow and Cornell University Professor Karim-Aly Kassam is no stranger to Central Asia and its academic institutions. Dr Kassam has spent the last seven years researching the Pamir Mountains of Afghanistan and Tajikistan, working closely with UCA and the Academy of Sciences, Republic of Tajikistan. It is no surprise he was elected Foreign Member (Academician) of the Academy of Sciences, Republic of Tajikistan. Dr Kassam was also appointed English Language Editor of the Academy’s Journal of the Biological and Medical Sciences.  The ceremony took place during the annual meeting of the Academy in Dushanbe on 12 December 2012.

Study of Central Asian Humanities and Cultural Heritage at UCA
A dynamic group of Central Asian and international research fellows are engaged in scholarship that reflects the diversity and richness of the cultures of the region at the University of Central Asia (UCA). In partnership with other scholars and custodians of culture in the region, their research is capturing and preserving existing information and cultural collections, while generating new dialogues and narratives on cultural heritage and identity in Central Asia.

First CAFDP Graduate Fellow returns to UCA
Kanat Tilekeyev became the pioneer graduate of University of Central Asia’s (UCA) Central Asian Faculty Development Programme (CAFDP) in September 2012. The Programme provides qualified Central Asian scholars with a commitment to the region the support to pursue postgraduate studies abroad and an opportunity to return to the region as scholars of UCA.

University of Central Asia launches Sustainable Mountain Development Report and a special issue of Mountain Research and Development journal on Central Asian Mountain Societies in Transition
The University of Central Asia’s (UCA) Mountain Societies Research Centre (MSRC) and the Mountain Partnership (MP) Central Asia Hub launched a report on Sustainable Mountain Development in Central Asia – From Rio 1992 to Rio2012 and Beyond and a special issue of the journal Mountain Research and Development (MRD) on Central Asian Mountain Societies in Transition in Bishkek, on 2 November 2012.

UCA holds regional roundtables to promote effective local development in the Kyrgyz Republic
In September and October 2012, the University of Central Asia (UCA) and the State Agency for Construction and Regional Development under the Government of the Kyrgyz Republic held a series of roundtables for representatives of bodies of local self-government (Aiyl Okmotu) around the theme “Regional Development:  Foundation of Reforms”. The roundtables - led by K. Narbayev, Head of SACRD, and attended by members of Parliament, representatives of the government, and deputy Governors of Oblasts - provided a unique forum to discuss the many issues relating to the socio-economic development of rural areas and the administrative-territorial reforms.
