Sacred Sites: An Opportunity for Improving Biocultural Diversity Conservation in Ysyk-Kol Biosphere Reserve

The author presents the results from his Master's thesis on sacred sites within Ysyk-Kol Biosphere Reserve (YKBR). The paper claims that sacred sites, defined as areas of land and bodies of water which are culturally and spiritually significant for local communities, represent traditional model of bioculturral diversity conservation. There are more than 100 sacred sites in Ysyk-Kol region, which makes traditional model of conservation (represented by sacred sites) be embedded in formal protected area (i.e. YKBR). The paper explored current interactions between these two models and identified ways, in which sacred sites can improve biocultural diversity conservation in YKBR.
Aibek Samakov is a graduate of the Natural Resources Institute of the University of Manitoba (Canada) and is a researcher at the Aigine Cultural Research Centre. In 2011-2013, he participated in Aigine's extensive research on sacred sites in Batken, Naryn and Chui regions of Kyrgyzstan. In 2013-2015, he pursued a Master's degree in natural resources management at the University of Manitoba.
