Public Lecture: Prospects and Challenges for Tourism Development in the Mountain Regions of Tajikistan

This lecture will discuss the prospects and challenges for tourism development in the mountain regions of Tajikistan. Given the growing global demand for tourism services, mountain regions are attractive destinations with its unique history and culture. Sustainable tourism development can become a profitable sector for Tajikistan’s economy introducing income from tourism dollars and a new industry for employment. However, effectively establishing and developing the tourism industry is hampered by several challenges which require in-depth analysis and study. During this session, Mamadrizhonov will share these issues and his proposed solutions.

Akbar Mamadrizohonov Dean of the Biological Faculty at the Khorog State University. He is a prominent natural sciences scientist and teacher. In 1993, he successfully defended his PhD and in 2001 completed his dissertation with the Biological and Soil Institute, National Academy of Sciences, Kyrgyz Republic. In 2002, Mamadrizhonov became Professor with the Department of Bioecology and Tourism. He is the author of several monographs including the Development of Ecotourism in the Mountainous Rregions of Tajikistan and the Organisation of Ecological Tourism. He has  authored over 140 articles published in national and international scientific publications, including more than 10 on scientific and methodical teaching aids and brochures. Mamadrizokhonov’s diverse research interests include conservation of biological diversity and tourism development in the mountain regions of  Tajikistan.  In 2011, he was elected as a Corresponding Member of the International Academy of Higher School Sciences.
