IPPA Public Lecture: Transforming Urban Waterfronts: Opportunities and Issues for Cities in Transition

Urban waterfront regeneration is a world-wide phenomenon, occurring in many countries and cities despite their origin, location and structure. This comes from a number of reasons, but one thing is common - living, working and relaxing on the waterfront is enjoyed by more and more people globally, which effects in rapid and comprehensive improvements of these areas. In result, waterfront transformation is subject of interest to both local authorities, local community and urban activists as well as to the private sector. During the lecture a number of the issues associated with urban waterfront transformation will be presented, including examples of good practice from various countries and continents. These will include also the cases from post-socialist and developing countries, which are now on the path towards developing advanced types of urban structures.

Professor Piotr Lorens is a lecturer in urban design and development and since 2007, the Head of the Department of Urban Design and Regional Planning at the Faculty of Architecture, Gdansk University of Technology. He graduated as an architect from the Gdansk University of Technology, and also completed the post-graduate studies as a Fulbright Fellow at Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Since then he is active as guest lecturer at numerous universities, mostly around Europe.
