Inaugural Cohort of Students Celebrate Kyrgyz Independence Day and UCA Hosts Fifth Consecutive Football Tournament in Naryn
The University of Central Asia’s (UCA) celebrated Kyrgyz Independence Day with its first cohort of students on 31 August 2016 and hosted its fifth annual football tournament between 22 and 27 August.

UCA Preparatory Programme faculty, students and School of Professional and Continuing Education staff participated in the parade, marched through the main Naryn town square forming a large “25” to mark the anniversary of Kyrgyz independence.
Following the parade, Tosh-Bulak Village residents Toigonbai Alykeev and Jeenbubu Kasymbaeva expressed their support for UCA, “We wish all UCA students luck, lots of prosperity and success. We are disappointed our kids are adults and they will not have the opportunity to go to a university like UCA. This University is making strides to promote Naryn town, Kyrgyzstan and the region.”
Students also visited the Naryn town art gallery, interacted with the community and explored the town centre for the first time since arriving to Naryn for orientation.
Earlier this week from 22 to 27 August, UCA held a football tournament as part of the celebrations. The qualifying matches were played at the University’s international standard sports facilities and UCA Board Executive Chairman Shamsh Kassim-Lakha and UCA Director General Dr Bohdan Krawchenko presented awards recognising the high level of athletic achievement.
Almaz Suranov, Naryn Vice-Mayor, attended the official opening of the tournament on 22 August. “The football tournament, that kicks off today, has become an excellent sports tradition not only for UCA but also for the citizens of Naryn. Dedicated to the Independence Day of the Kyrgyz Republic, the tournament attracts more and more football teams across the Oblast and the Kyrgyz Republic. I wish all the participants fair play in the exciting five days of sports competition and best of luck,” remarked Suranov.
The football pitch conforms with world football governing body (FIFA) standards and the tennis courts are also of international standards with artificial surface. These facilities were built by the residents of Naryn City and Tosh- Bulak village and will promote wellness and health in the region.

“Each match is a unique experience and I look forward to playing in next year’s tournament as I can’t imagine my life without football,” remarked Syimyk Ryskulbekov from the champion RTS team who enjoyed the competitive matches.
The nine participating teams represented diverse Naryn neighbourhoods and included: Tosh-Bulak, Almabak, Shaarcha, Borbor, Zhany Zher, Ak Korgon, RTS, Ardagerler, as well as a UCA staff team.
UCA has organised the tournament since 2012, presenting the champion’s trophy to the following teams:
The Football Association of the Kyrgyz Republic representative in the Naryn Oblast, Bolot Bektemishov, greeted the UCA leadership, teams and the football fans on the final day, “On behalf of the Football Association, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the UCA management and staff for a well-organised tournament. Football is a truly international game that unites people irrespective of their cultures and languages.’
