Tourism Sector in Kyrgyzstan: Trends and Challenges

This paper examines the current state of the Kyrgyz tourism sector and identifies major obstacles impeding its dynamic and sustainable growth. Kyrgyzstan is far from reaching its tourist potential due to its underdeveloped infrastructure and poor marketing. The limited choice and low quality of tourist products compounded by their short seasonality are also hampering growth in the sector. A series of recommendations aimed at addressing these constraints are provided.

The paper also analyses the key value chains in the tourism sector, and finds that local communities at tourist sites receive an insignificant share of the proceeds. In addition to public sources of data, the paper draws on the results of a tourist firm survey conducted by the Institute of Public Policy and Administration, UCA, and extensive interviews with key stakeholders in the tourism sector.
