Senior Country Economist for the Kyrgyz Republic
The first World Bank presentation will provide an overview of the Kyrgyz economic performance over the first 11 months of 2018, highlighting some of the macroeconomic vulnerabilities the country is exposed to and will share growth projections for 2019 and 2020. The special topic for this Economic Update is "Agriculture as a Potential for Growth and Development”, focusing on the challenges facing the agri-food exporters to the EEU (especially Russia, Kazakhstan) and China and the supportive role the government should play.
The second presentation will focus on the Russian economy covering 2018 economic performance, future growth prospects, poverty reduction and economic diversification.
Mr. Apurva Sanghi is the World Bank’s Lead Economist for the Russian Federation based in Moscow. Prior to that, he served as the Lead Economist for Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda and Eritrea. He also led the Economic Growth Cluster of the World Bank’s Poverty Reduction and Economic Management Department in Washington DC. Before joining the World Bank, Apurva worked in private sector consulting; for the Thailand Development Research Institute; and held teaching and research positions at the University of Chicago, Thammasat University (Bangkok), and Yale University. He is also a selective commentator on economic issues in the pages of major international media outlets such as the Financial Times; the Economist; Project Syndicate; Forbes (Russia), and blogs in the Brookings and the World Bank’s site. Apurva holds college degrees in physics and economics from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) and a PhD from the University of Chicago, where his core training was in growth and macroeconomics.
Ms. Appolenia Mbowe is the Senior Country Economist for the Kyrgyz Republic based in Bishkek. Prior to that, she served as a Senior Economist in the Country Economics Unit of the Operations Policy and Country Services in Washington D.C. after serving as a Senior Country Economist for Malawi based in Lilongwe. Before joining the Bank, she served as a Principal Economist at the Africa Development Bank base in Tunisia and was responsible for Swaziland, Zimbabwe, Sudan and Eritrea. Prior to that she was an economist at the Central Bank of Tanzania. She is a holder of Master’ Degree in Economics from the University of Manchester, United Kingdom.
