Professor, Department of World History
Khorog State University

The lecture will discuss the little-studied history of civil airlines in different areas of Pamir from 1929 through 1993. In 2013-2018, the lecturer was engaged in a research project, and collected significant number of materials from state’s archives in the Pamirs, as well as individual and family photos. Using the collected data, the lecturer conducted objective analysis of the events, related to the history of airlines in the Pamirs. The paradox is that geographical isolation of the Pamirs and market economy make flights to the Pamirs progressively less available, and sometimes flights might not be available several months in a row. In light of this, building on his assumptions and recommendations the lecturer will engage the audience into discussion to find solutions for this problem.

In 1977, Elbon Khochibekov graduated from the Historical Department of V. I. Lenin Tajik State University. For several years now he has been engaged in research and teaching activities. In 1984, he received the “Excellent Worker of Public Education of the Republic of Tajikistan” award. In 2002, he defended his doctoral thesis. In 2014, the Academic Council of Khorog State University granted him with an academic title of Chair Professor. In 2015, he received the “Distinguished Worker of Science and Education” award. He is Full Professor (2015) and Doctor Honoris Causa (2017) of the Russian Academy of Natural History. He produced several monographies and essays about the history and ethnology of Badakhshan, as well as more than 64 research papers.
