AKHP Public Lecture, Almaty: Sustainable Development of Tourism in the Republic of Kazakhstan: Global and Local Contexts

University of Central Asia’s (UCA) Aga Khan Humanities Project (AKHP) has established a dialog platform to host a series of public lectures in Almaty, Republic of Kazakhstan. The platform is organised in partnership with the Kazakh Academy of Sports and Tourism. The series seeks to facilitate professional development of faculty and promotes cross-disciplinary dialog. It is open for scholars, researchers, teachers, public activists, academic and creative community, as well as for students, pursuing doctoral, masters and undergraduate degrees in universities of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

“The Concept for Development of Tourism Industry in the Republic of Kazakhstan till 2023” provides a platform for the creation of methodological, organisational and expert framework to facilitate the development of an up-to-date, highly efficient and competitive tourism industry in Kazakhstan. The main principles and approaches for implementation of the Concept include global and local reach in the development of external and internal tourism. What are the principles and solutions for sustainable development of tourism in Kazakhstan? What mechanisms of this complex process are rooted in the socio-economic development of the country? The lecture will answer these questions, and share the lecturer’s views on addressing certain issues, related to development of modern tourism.
Ordenbek Blisbekovich Mazbaev is Doctor of Geographical Sciences, and Professor of Geography and Tourism at L.N. Gumilyov Eurasian National University in Astana (Kazakhstan). He leads a research project on the development of educational standards in geography and tourism disciplines. Mazbaev has also authored over 410 publications including educational aid, textbooks on tourism and geography, and electronic multimedia textbooks on physical geography. He has been published in “Thomson Reuters” (7 publications) and “Scopus” (2 publications); and is rated in the "h-index" (an author-level metric that measures both the productivity and citation impact of the publications of a scientist or scholar).
Mazbaev has received a number of awards including: “Excellent Worker of Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan” (1993); “The Best University Professor of the Republic of Kazakhstan” (2012); medal “For Contribution to the Development of Science in the Republic of Kazakhstan” (2018); "European Quality Award" and "European Quality" gold medal (2013); and a silver medal from the USSR Championship on Auto and Motor Tourism (1989).
