Public Lecture: Evidence of Selection on OLEOSIN-like Gene and Association with Environmental Variables in Persian Walnut Species

Persian walnut (Juglans regia L.) is an economically and ecologically important species in Kyrgyzstan. Natural walnut forests grow between western and southwestern slopes of the Fergana and Chatkal mountain ridges in southern Kyrgyzstan. This study is the first large-scale analysis using microsatellite markers to estimate genetic diversity and population structure of Persian walnuts. We investigated eleven natural populations of Persian walnuts using eight simple sequence repeats (SSR) and eight markers derived from expressed sequence tags. The SSR markers revealed comparatively high levels of genetic diversity, high extent of an isolation-by-distance model and presence of spatial genetic distance among walnut populations. The study explores the gene-environmental association in the context of various climatic scenarios by aligning the conserved gene regions taken from samples with different climatic factors like temperature, pressure and solar wind.
Nurlan Torokeldiev investigated patterns of genetic variation, spatial genetic structure and the adaptive genetic divergence of natural J. regia L. populations in the southern Kyrgyz Republic, and successfully defended his PhD dissertation at the Institute of Biotechnology and Plant Sciences at Georg-August-University of Göttingen in Germany in 2016.
