UCA Helps Farmers Put New Life in Tired Soil
UCA and Aga Khan Agency for Habitat hold Second Summer University on Disaster Risk Management
Over 20 participants from Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Pakistan, India and the United States came together for the second international Summer University on Disaster Risk Management in Khorog, Tajikistan. Held from June 16-28, the Summer University is organised by the Aga Khan Agency for Habitat (AKAH) and the University of Central Asia’s (UCA) Mountain Societies Research Institute (MSRI) and conducted in collaboration with the University of Bern of Switzerland and the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences in Vienna.
UCA Holds Regional Conference on Role of Civil Society in Development
The first of its kind in the last decade, the Civil Society Initiative of the University of Central Asia (UCA) organised a regional conference on “New Pathways to Development” in Bishkek on 17 May 2019. It provided a platform for key stakeholders – government, members of parliament, civil society organisations, corporations, and researchers – to discuss and debate new approaches to foster the growth of a vibrant civil society. Over 150 attendees from 12 countries participated in the Conference.
Dr. Shamsh Kassim-Lakha Receives Naryn Citizenship
In recognition of the significant contribution made by the Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) to the social and economic development of Naryn, Dr. Shamsh Kassim-Lakha, Diplomatic Representative of the AKDN in the Kyrgyz Republic and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the University of Central Asia (UCA), was conferred the Honorary Citizen of Naryn Oblast and Naryn Town at a Tenir Too Forum in Bishkek on April 30th.

Eight Entrepreneurs Win Funding to Start Businesses in Kyrgyzstan
The University of Central Asia’s (UCA) School of Professional and Continuing Education (SPCE) organised an event on March 28th 2019 where 30 alumni of UCA’s entrepreneurship programme pitched business project ideas and competed for financial awards. The eight best pitches received grants from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) for further business development. Winning projects include bakery and pastry shops, souvenir production, women’s clothing, and furniture businesses.
Workshop on Enhancing Citizen Engagement with Open Government Data
The University of Central Asia’s Civil Society Initiative (CSI) organised a workshop on “Citizen Engagement with Open Government Data” on March 27-30 in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. The event was aimed at raising civil society organisations’ awareness of the Open Government Partnership (OGP), and strengthening the capacity of participants’ to monitor the implementation of the "Achyk Okmot" National Action Plan for 2018-2020 to build an Open Government in Kyrgyzstan.
Predicting Climate Change in Kyrgyzstan
The University of Central Asia's Mountain Societies Research Institute ( held a Public Lecture in Bishkek on the “Impact Assessment of Grazing and Climatic Factors on Vegetation in Kyrgyzstan” in March 2019. Delivered by Dr. Maksim Kulikov, he presented outputs of his research on an assessment of the interactions between soil, vegetation and climatic factors, quantifying them to better predict climate change scenarios.
