Veterans of the Soviet-Afghan War in Tajikistan
The veterans movement of the 1980s was heavily invested in the structures and symbols of the Soviet state. The veterans turned to the state not just for material and financial benefits, but also for recognition of their identity as veterans. This lecture will describe the perspectives of veterans of the Soviet-Afghan war in Tajikistan.

Open Seminar: Research for Sustainable Land Management: Status, Challenges and Pathways for Improvement
 This open seminar will present the findings of MSRI’s Background Paper on Sustainable Land Management in Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan: A Research Review. The paper provides an overview of the state of research on sustainable land management (SLM) in Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan and analyses the interface between research and action. The authors reviewed 131 publications and used the Global Land Project analytic framework to assess the focus and gaps in research. To gain further insight, they facilitated a stakeholder feedback session at the September 2012 Central Asian Mountain Partnership Forum (CAMP Forum 2012) in Dushanbe, Tajikistan, which focused on the theme of SLM.

This lecture will examine the theoretical basis of building international accounts and the balance of payments of the Kyrgyz Republic. The lecture will also include an overview of the current status of the balance of payments of the Kyrgyz Republic based on data on the first half of 2013. Features of the country's balance of payments statistics will be described, as well as the problem of "errors and omissions".

This lecture will describe the findings of research conducted on Kyrgyz settlements in the early and intermediate Soviet years. It will emphasize the 1916 rebellion and early Slavic colonisation of Kyrgyz lands as catalysts of social and political change and settlement, prior to the Stalinist economic programme of 1929-30.
