The Drug Situation in Central Asia and Effective Responses: The New Phase of the Central Asia Drug Action Programme (CADAP) of the European Union
Central Asian countries are experiencing increased drug abuse and related problems such as the threat of infectious diseases such as HIV and hepatitis among injecting drug users. The Action Plan on Drugs between the European Union (EU) and the Central Asian states (2009-13) acknowledges the shared commitment to address drug-related concerns, intensify cooperation and provide assistance in drug prevention and treatment.

Hunting with Eagles in Kyrgyzstan: Central Asian Falconry and the Maintenance of Traditional Knowledge
The Kyrgyz tradition of capturing, training, and hunting with golden eagles has survived for centuries through oral transmission, passed down from father to son through dynastic chains of tradition. The breadth of knowledge involved in the craft is astounding - an eagle hunter is required to be an expert in bird taxonomy and physiology, raptor reproduction and migration patterns, and raptor husbandry.

In the Name of Victory: Turning the Hungry Steppe into New Land in Zafarabad, Tajikistan (1959-1979)
This lecture discusses the historical creation of “new land” (tselina) through irrigation development during the Khrushchev and Brezhnev eras in Soviet Central Asia, specifically the so-called Hungry Steppe (Golodnaia step’) or vast plain south-west of the Syr Darya River shared by Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and Tajikistan.

This lecture, based on anthropological fieldwork conducted in the Toktogul region of the Kyrgyz Republic between 2006 and 2008, analyses how people there understand and interact with water, raising questions and providing insight into water metaphors used in current political and social science descriptions of the world.

From birth to death communities practice various rituals related to key lifetime events, such as birth, marriage and death. In Kyrgyzstan, these rituals encompass ancient worldviews, beliefs and values, and traditional knowledge on pedagogy and medicine, and can be considered an “oral constitution.”
