Jusup Abdrakhmanov: Dekulakization, the Basmachy Movement and the Great Famine

Based on new archival research, the article examines the statesmanship of Jusup Abdrakhmanov, the Chairman of the Council of People’s Commissars of Kyrgyz Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic, his critical views about the Soviet government’s policy on dekulakization and the basmachy movement in the 1930s, and his attempts to prevent his Kyrgyz people from starvation as well as his kind support for Kazakh brothers who fled to Kyrgyzstan during the great famine in 1932.
