Mountain societies in Central Asia stand at the forefront of the climate crisis, bearing both its challenges and opportunities. Their unique geographic positioning and fragile economic foundations make them acutely vulnerable to the escalating impacts of climate change, endangering ecosystems, heritage, resilience, and their way of life.
The University of Central Asia is addressing these challenges through cutting-edge research, evidence-based solutions, and initiatives designed to mitigate and adapt to climate change in Central Asia.
As part of these efforts, UCA is pleased to announce an inspiring Sustainable Mountain Development Programme (SMD), featuring a series of events across the UCA’s founding states - Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan.
This milestone year holds special significance: 2025 has been designated by Tajikistan as the ‘International Year of Glacier Preservation’; it marks the midpoint of Kyrgyzstan’s ‘Five Years of Action for the Development of Mountain Regions’; and it celebrates UCA’s Silver Jubilee—the 25th anniversary of its founding.
