ORCID Community: KG Initiative
The "ORCID Community: KG Initiative" by the University of Central Asia is designed to unite researchers across Kyrgyzstan by creating a vibrant, interconnected network through ORCID integration. The project will conduct seminars at 35 universities, with the participation of 600 researchers. These seminars will focus on the importance of ORCID in enhancing the visibility of Kyrgyz scientists and streamlining their academic publications. By utilizing both online and offline training modes, the initiative aims to reach researchers from across the country while offering on-site mentoring for individual consultations.
This project addresses a key regulatory shift in Kyrgyzstan's academic landscape. In 2020, the Government of the Kyrgyz Republic (KR) introduced amendments requiring PhD applicants to have at least two articles published in journals indexed by Scopus or WOS. The University of Central Asia’s ORCID Community: KG Initiative aligns with these new requirements by equipping local researchers with the necessary tools and skills to meet international publishing standards. By ensuring mandatory ORCID registration, the project empowers Kyrgyz researchers to elevate their work and expand their reach beyond local academic circles.
The initiative is led by Dr. Gulnara Dzhunushalieva, UCA’s Grant Principal Investigator (email gulnara.djunushalieva@ucentralasia.org)
The project is funded by ORCID’s Global Participation Fund (GPF), part of the Global Participation Program (GPP). Since 2022, ORCID has distributed over $350,000 to support organizations in under-represented countries, particularly within the Global South. The grant UCA received falls under the Community Development and Outreach program, which supports local partners in building robust communities of practice that encourage ORCID adoption. This funding will enable UCA to provide essential outreach activities, training, and technical support, fostering the growth of ORCID consortia in Kyrgyzstan.
