Call for Applications - Second International Workshop on Mountainous Environments

The University of Central Asia is excited to announce the call for applications for its Second International Workshop on Mountainous Environments. This year’s workshop focuses on the study of Central Asian glaciers. As glaciers rapidly retreat worldwide, Central Asia faces similar challenges. Glaciers play a crucial role in water availability, serving as essential water sources for downstream populations and ecosystems. Moreover, their retreat significantly impacts regional climate patterns, affecting weather, precipitation, and temperature.
Workshop Topics:
- GIS and Remote Sensing Techniques for Glacier Study: Learn the basics of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and how to apply them to glacier research.
- Glacial Mass Balance Assessment: Understand how remote sensing techniques help assess glacial mass balance.
- Glacial Lake Formation and Outburst Hazard Assessment: Explore the formation of hazardous glacial lakes and the risks they pose to communities and infrastructure.
- Glacier-Related Flood Management and Risk Assessment: Discover effective strategies for managing glacier-related floods and assessing flood risks using streamflow analysis.
Eligibility: The workshop is open to bachelor’s, master’s, and PhD students, young researchers, and faculty members under 35 years old. Proficiency in English is required.
Application Process: To apply, submit your CV and a motivation letter to khorog.workshop@ucentralasia.org by May 30th, 2024. In your motivation letter, explain your interest in glacier studies, your research or professional goals related to glaciers, and your expectations from the workshop. The selection committee will notify applicants of the outcome by July 15th, 2024.
Expenses: UCA will cover transportation expenses from Dushanbe to Khorog and back, along with accommodation and meals during the workshop. Participants are responsible for their travel expenses from their hometowns to Dushanbe and back.
