Solmaz Mohadjer is an Assistant Professor of Earth and Environmental Sciences with UCA’s School of Arts and Sciences. Her research interests are in the linkage between mountain hazards and mountain building processes, continental deformation and erosion. She integrates a variety of tools and datasets in her research including geomorphology, geochronology, geodesy and remote sensing. Her latest research projects include measuring catchment-wide erosion rates in the western Tian Shan, investigating postglacial erosion and the role of rockfalls in the evolution of alpine landscapes, and quantifying crustal deformation in the India-Asia orogen. In addition, Mohadjer has a longstanding interest in improving geohazards science delivery for disaster risk reduction. In 2011, she founded the ParsQuake Project to support the development of educational materials and briefs for informing the public and maximizing the use of scientific evidence in policymaking. She currently serves as an associate editor for Geoscience Communication and is a member of the European Geosciences Union’s Outreach Committee.
Mohadjer holds a Ph.D. in Geosciences from the University of Tübingen (Germany), a master’s from the University of Montana (USA), and a Bachelor of Science from the University of Washington (USA). Prior to joining UCA, Mohadjer was a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Tübingen, where she developed a geohazards database for Central Asia, measured erosion rates using cosmogenic isotopes in the western Tian Shan, and created educational videos for sharing geoscience with K-12 schools.
