About the Anthology “Women in Central Asia: Images and Challenges in a Changing World”
The anthology is part of the Research and Education for Policy Analysis and Governance Enhancement (REPAGE) programmе on gender and civil society in Central Asia, supported by the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) of Canada and the Aga Khan Foundation Canada. Managed by the Cultural Heritage and Humanities Unit (CHHU) of the University of Central Asia, the development of the anthology reflects a commitment to fostering dialogue and understanding on issues of gender and society in Central Asia. The anthology stands as a testament to the diversity of voices and perspectives within Central Asia. Bringing together a wide range of publications—from academic articles to photo essays—the anthology showcases the richness and complexity of women’s experiences in the region. The contributors represent a variety of groups, including journalists, scholars, traditional practitioners, and women activists, offering a multifaceted exploration of women’s lives in Central Asia.
About the Teacher’s Guide:
The Teacher’s Guide was developed by the Aga Khan Humanities Project to enhance the pedagogical effectiveness of the course based on the anthology Women in Central Asia: Images and Challenges in a Changing World. The principal aim of this guide is to assist instructors in identifying and implementing the most appropriate teaching methodologies for a course of such thematic and disciplinary complexity.
Mountain Societies Research Institute contributed to the REPAGE project through research on the gendered impacts of climate change on rural livelihoods and natural resources in the mountain regions of Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan. The studies highlight how environmental and social stressors affect men and women differently and emphasize inclusive, gender-sensitive approaches to strengthen climate resilience and sustainable adaptation in high-altitude communities.
