The University of Central Asia (UCA) in partnership with the Cambridge Trust is pleased to announce prestigious scholarship opportunities for master and doctoral studies at the University of Cambridge, United Kingdom. The initiative is a part of UCA’s ongoing Central Asian Faculty Development Programme (CAFDP) designed to promote scholarship among the Central Asian postgraduate community and equip regional talent for careers in academia and particularly at UCA.
Programme Overview
The UCA-Cambridge Scholarship is available to outstanding candidates from UCA’s founding states of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan. Applicants from Afghanistan, Pakistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan will also be considered however priority will be given to applicants from the founding states. It supports applicants in a wide range of subjects relevant to UCA's strategic goals.
UCA is Central Asia’s sole regional university with fully residential campuses in Naryn, Kyrgyzstan and Khorog, Tajikistan with further plans for a campus in Tekeli, Kazakhstan. UCA’s Graduate School of Development, based predominantly in Bishkek, with smaller offices in Dushanbe and Khorog, leads the University’s research and development initiatives. The partnership between UCA and the Cambridge Trust builds on the quality and standing of both UCA and the University of Cambridge, to enhance the academic quality of UCA’s and Central Asia’s future faculty and research community.
To date, the scholarship has supported 1 Postdoctoral, 8 PhD, and 4 master’s researchers, each making significant contributions to their respective fields and advancing the mission of fostering academic excellence and innovation within Central Asia region. Scholarship holders are expected to also gain teaching and research experience, as well as pedagogical training during their doctoral studies, where appropriate, including through academic engagement with UCA faculty

Fields of Study
The scholarship is available for graduate and postgraduate studies in subjects that align with UCA’s research and education interests and expertise at the School of Arts & Sciences and the Graduate School of Development.
Eligible fields include Earth, Climate and Environmental Sciences, Computer and Data Sciences, Media and Communications, Development Economics, Climate Economics and Public Policy, Public Health and Health Economics, Cultural Heritage and Society. Other fields may be considered based on UCA’s needs. Where appropriate, preference will be given to research topics engaging with theoretical or applied work especially pertinent to the Central Asian region.
It is expected that the research undertaken will also have direct relevance to Central Asia and that fieldwork would therefore normally be expected to be undertaken in Central Asia during the 2nd or 3rd year of the doctoral programme.
Note: MBA, EMBA, MFin and BusD degrees are not covered by this scholarship.
Scholarship Value
The UCA-Cambridge scholarship will cover:
- University tuition fee (paid directly to Cambridge).
- Annual stipend (sufficient for the student).
- Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS).
- Visa.
Additional support from UCA
- Annual Research Allowance (PhD only)
- Travel expenses to and from the UK at the start and conclusion of the studies.
Note: Please note that the scholarship does not provide any support or funding for any dependents or family members.
Opportunities and Support
As part of the scholarship conditions, recipients will be offered an employment contract with UCA, which includes a commitment to contribute in an agreed teaching and/or research role after the completion of their studies.
Scholarship recipients will be assigned to a UCA mentor throughout their studies at Cambridge, in addition and supplement to their Cambridge mentor/supervisor. This will support their re-integration to UCA following the completion of their studies.
UCA’s Eligibility Criteria
All applicants will first be required to meet the eligibility criteria that includes:
- Citizens of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan.Applicants from Afghanistan, Pakistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan will also be considered however priority will be given to applicants from the founding states.
- Higher education degree with excellent academic records from a recognised university
- Interest in master’s or PhD programme in departments reflecting UCA fields of interest, outlined above
- Interest in a career within academia, including research and teaching
- Demonstrated competency in chosen discipline
- Demonstrated commitment to undertaking employment with UCA in teaching and/or research following the completion of the CAFDP programme
- Excellent English language skills: IELTS score of 7.5 (with a minimum of 7.0 in each individual component) or TOEFL score of 110 (with 25 in each element)
- GRE General Test scores for Economics programmes (not required if the applicant has a degree from a UK institution). GMAT tests are not accepted.

- Curriculum Vitae/Resume (3 pages maximum)
- All items relevant to the eligibility criteria listed above including a personal statement outlining your short and long-term career goals, field of study and research interests, reason for applying to the CAFDP, and what makes you a good candidate for CAFDP at Cambridge (3 pages maximum).
- A short research proposal (3 pages maximum) if the course chosen is entirely or predominantly research-based or equal taught/research based.
- A copy of your passport.
- Academic Transcripts and Diplomas.
Applications will be reviewed by the UCA selection committee and shortlisted applications will be invited to submit a full online application to the University of Cambridge, by December 2, 2025/January 7, 2026 depending on the chosen programme (please refer to the Postgraduate Course Directory).

Q: Is there an age limit for applicants?
A: No. There is no specific age restriction. Both recent graduates and mid-career professionals are welcome to apply, as long as you meet the programme's requirements.
Q: Can I apply if I have already completed a master’s or PhD?
A: Yes. Applicants who already hold a postgraduate degree may apply if their proposed study area is relevant to UCA’s or AKDN’s priorities.
Q: Is the scholarship open for both master’s and PhD studies?
A: Yes. Applicants may apply for either level, or for integrated MPhil-to-PhD programmes. It is recommended to focus on one application to make it as strong as possible.
Q: What programmes are prioritized for scholarships?
A: Priority is given to programmes that align with UCA’s teaching and research focus areas. Applicants are encouraged to review UCA’s undergraduate and graduate programmes on the website to identify areas of alignment.
Q: Can I apply for programmes outside UCA’s priority areas?
A: You may apply if your chosen field demonstrates a clear link to UCA’s mission or regional development needs.
Q: Are business or MBA programmes supported?
A: No. MBA and most business programmes are not covered.
Q: Is an English language test (IELTS or TOEFL) required?
A: Yes. All applicants must meet Cambridge’s English language proficiency requirements, regardless of whether previous education was conducted in English.
Q: Should TOEFL or IELTS scores be submitted directly to Cambridge, UCA, or both?
A: TOEFL or IELTS scores are required by Cambridge and must be submitted as part of the application process if you receive a conditional offer from Cambridge. If you receive a conditional offer, you will have time to meet their requirements. UCA does not require them during the initial stage.
Q: How long are the scores valid?
A: Test results must remain valid until at least the start of the academic year for which you are applying.
Q: What is the application process?
A: The process has two stages:
- Applicants first apply through UCA’s CAFDP platform for preliminary review and shortlisting.
- Shortlisted candidates by UCA will be invited to apply formally to the University of Cambridge.
Q: Can I apply directly to Cambridge without going through UCA?
A: Yes, but such applications will be considered independently by Cambridge and will not be eligible for UCA–Cambridge Trust funding.
Q: Do I need a supervisor at this stage?
A: PhD applicants should begin identifying potential supervisors early. This is not required for master’s applicants.
Q: Can applicants reapply in future rounds if not selected?
A: Yes, resubmission is allowed, and previous applicants are encouraged to strengthen their applications for the next call.
Q: What does the scholarship cover?
A: The scholarship covers the full university tuition fee (paid directly to Cambridge), an annual stipend for living expenses, the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS), and visa costs.
In addition, UCA provides a research allowance for PhD students and covers travel expenses to and from the UK at the beginning and end of the study period.
Q: Does the scholarship provide support for dependents or family members?
A: No. The scholarship supports individual fellows only.
Q: How long does the scholarship last?
A: It covers the standard duration of the academic programme - typically one year for master’s and three to four years for PhDs.
Q: What are the requirements after graduation?
A: As part of the scholarship, recipients will be offered an employment arrangement with UCA or another appropriate role within AKDN, which includes an agreed-upon teaching, research, or professional contribution following the completion of their studies. The specific role and placement will be determined based on the recipient’s field of study and available opportunities. Q: Will there be orientation or mentorship support?
A: Yes. Selected fellows will receive guidance from UCA and mentorship throughout their studies to support academic success and reintegration.

A: You will receive an acknowledgment email from UCA after submitting your application. Please ensure all required sections are complete before the deadline.
