In the first half of the 19th century, interest in the qobyz musical tradition declined significantly. This was due to the weakening role of the arts and the loss of authority of the storytellers - zhyrau - in Kazakh society. During this period, short melodic chants known as saryn grew in popularity. A turning point in the development of qobyz music came with the emergence of the legendary Ykylas Dukenuly, who was both an innovator and a guardian of qobyz traditions. His work marked a new era in the flourishing of Kazakh instrumental music.
