UCA Research Highlights Gaps in Addressing Sexual Violence Against Women with Disabilities
UCA’s Civil Society Initiative presented findings from its research that explored sexual violence against women and girls with disabilities in Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Uzbekistan. The presentation was part of the “Bir Duino – Kyrgyzstan 2024” International Documentary Film Festival and the global campaign 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence.
The event brought together civic activists, including people with disabilities, experts on gender-based violence, and representatives of state agencies. Notable attendees included Asel Chynbaeva, Ombudsperson for Children’s Rights in the Kyrgyz Republic; Kyial Zhanuzakova, Deputy Minister of Labor, Social Security, and Migration of the Kyrgyz Republic; and Gulmira Okeeva, Head of the Gender Department at the Ministry of Labor, Social Security, and Migration of the Kyrgyz Republic.
The research findings highlighted pressing challenges in addressing sexual violence in the three countries. Despite the ratification of key international conventions, critical gaps persist in establishing inclusive legal frameworks and ensuring equitable access to justice for survivors with disabilities.
Participants discussed the findings and developed actionable recommendations for key stakeholders. Proposed measures included improving judicial procedures, creating supportive conditions during legal proceedings, and ensuring accessible support services tailored to the needs of survivors.
