Life in Kyrgyzstan Conference Highlights Groundbreaking Research for Policy and Development

The Life in Kyrgyzstan Conference took place from 9 October to 11 October in Bishkek, marking its 10th anniversary as a premier platform for scholars, policymakers, and development practitioners worldwide. The conference facilitated discussions on key socio-economic and development challenges in Kyrgyzstan and the broader Central Asian region.

In his opening remarks, Professor Christopher Gerry, Rector of the University of Central Asia (UCA), emphasised the importance of research in shaping policy decisions for the region. "The Life in Kyrgyzstan survey has provided rich, comprehensive data on the social and economic lives of individuals, families, and communities across Kyrgyzstan. Over time, this survey has become an invaluable resource, offering deep and unique insights into the transformations, challenges, and opportunities faced by the people of this region," he stated.

The First Deputy Minister of Economy and Commerce of the Kyrgyz Republic, Mr Choro Seyitov, delivered the first keynote, focusing on Kyrgyzstan’s Development Strategy until 2030. He highlighted the relevance of research for policymaking, noting: "The research conducted by scientists and presented at this conference is of great interest to government bodies. Economic studies, in particular, are of interest to the Ministry of Economy and the entire economic sector of the country, as the results of this research can be used in our decision-making." He also emphasised the government’s commitment to job creation and education reforms: “We aim to create quality jobs and ensure the development of human capital meets the needs of the evolving economy.”

Over the three days, participants engaged in discussions on a broad range of topics crucial to the socio-economic development of Central Asia. These included the impact of environmental change on livelihoods, food security challenges, migration patterns and their socio-economic effects, and the role of gender in development. Other key areas of focus were economic growth strategies, digital transformation, and education reform. The event fostered collaborative dialogue between academics, policymakers, and practitioners, all committed to addressing regional challenges through research-driven solutions and policy recommendations. “The data from the Life in Kyrgyzstan survey of 8,000 individuals and 3,000 households is unique in the region and has been instrumental for doctoral students in Central Asia and beyond,” said Damir Esenaliev, Senior Researcher, Leibniz Institute of Vegetable and Ornamental Crops (IGZ), and International Security and Development Centre (ISDC).

UCA remains dedicated to promoting research and dialogue that contribute to the sustainable development of Central Asia. The insights shared at this year’s Life in Kyrgyzstan Conference will play a crucial role in shaping policies and programmes aimed at improving the quality of life for communities across the region.

The Life in Kyrgyzstan (LiK) Conference, now a well-established annual event, is organised by UCA’s Institute of Public Policy and Administration (IPPA), IGZ, and ISDC. Additional support for this year’s event came from the American University of Central Asia (AUCA), the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), the World Bank, and ACTED.
