The University of Central Asia, through its Green Deal for Central Asian Universities initiative and the Sustainable Mountain Development Programme (SMDP), recently organised a climate awareness and sustainability workshop at the UCA Naryn Campus for students from local higher education institutions in Naryn.

The workshop brought together around 20 students, UCA staff, and representatives of municipal services to explore climate change, environmental sustainability, and practical local solutions for waste management and green development in mountain communities.

Through interactive discussions and presentations, participants examined global climate trends, human impacts on the environment, and innovative recycling and upcycling approaches relevant to Central Asia. The sessions also highlighted the importance of community engagement and individual action in addressing environmental challenges.

A dedicated session focused on waste management practices in Naryn, including current environmental challenges, the lifecycle of waste in the city, and future plans to strengthen local waste management systems. Participants also learned about the recently established waste sorting facility in Naryn and engaged in discussions on sustainable urban development.

As part of the practical component of the workshop, students participated in a tree-planting activity on the UCA campus, planting around 40 trees, including juniper, maple, and paulownia species, contributing to the university’s ongoing greening efforts.

The programme concluded with a visit to UCA’s campus greenhouses, where participants explored sustainable food production practices, environmentally friendly fertilisers, and the use of solar energy in greenhouse operations.

The event reflects UCA’s continued commitment to advancing environmental education, climate resilience, and sustainable development across mountain regions while encouraging greater youth engagement in local sustainability initiatives.
