UCA Hosts International Workshop on Central Asian Glaciers and Climate Adaptation

University of Central Asia
31 October 2024

UCA held its Second International Workshop on Mountainous Environments: Glaciers of Central Asia at the Khorog Campus of its School of Arts and Sciences in October 2024. This event brought together researchers, students, and academics from Tajikistan, China, Kazakhstan, the Netherlands, Russia, and the United Kingdom, with a shared focus on critical glacier studies essential for water management and climate adaptation in Central Asia.

The workshop featured four days of intensive training led by faculty and researchers from UCA’s Earth and Environmental Sciences department and Mountain Societies Research Institute. Key topics covered GIS and remote sensing for glacier research, glacier mass balance assessment, glacial lake hazards, and flood risk management. Field excursions to Pamir glacier sites allowed participants to apply their knowledge in a practical setting.

Aligned with UCA’s Climate Change and Sustainability in Mountainous Areas initiative, the workshop underscored the university's commitment to advancing climate research and fostering international collaboration.
