UCA’s Mountain Societies Research Institute Strengthens Research and Policy Networks in Almaty

As part of the UCA’s Sustainable Mountain Development Programme, the Mountain Societies Research Institute (MSRI) organised a series of activities in Almaty aimed at strengthening collaboration with Kazakh researchers and institutions, showcasing MSRI’s research, and building cross-border networks in mountain sustainability.

Engagement with the National Academy of Sciences

MSRI colleagues from Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan visited the National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Kazakhstan. The UCA delegation was welcomed by Mr. Ular Mukazhanov, General Director of Gylym Ordasy, where both sides discussed potential collaboration in research and cultural heritage.
During the exchange, UCA delegation presented the General Director with books published by the Cultural Heritage and Humanities UnitKyrgyz Kuuloru (in two parts with CD discs) and Fairytales of Badakhshan — branded with the University’s 25th anniversary sleeve. In return, UCA team received a set of publications from the General Director.
The delegation also toured the Museum of Rare Books, Museum of Archaeology, and exhibitions from the Museum of the History and Science of Kazakhstan, and learned about the activities of the Center for Restoration and Conservation.

Workshop on Climate Change: Forecasting Water, Warming, and Health

UCA in partnership with Green Academy and the Center for Emergency Situations and Disaster Risk Reduction (CESDRR) organised a workshop on “Climate Change: Forecasting Water, Warming, and Health” at CESDRR.
CESDRR is an intergovernmental body dedicated to enhancing regional cooperation in reducing disaster risks and managing emergency response. The Center’s Director, Prof. J.I. Ukashev, opened the workshop with welcoming remarks, highlighting the Center’s potential as a platform for joint activities and regional policy dialogue. Dr Bakhyt Yessekina, a member of UCA’s Board of Trustees in Kazakhstan, delivered opening remarks and moderated the first session, while Prof. Eran Edirisinghe from UCA also shared his welcoming address.

The workshop included three thematic sessions:

  1. Climate Change and Water
  2. GLOF, Hazard Mapping, and Early Warning Systems
  3. Climate Change and Health

Presenters included MSRI researchers Dr Murodbek Laljebaev, Dr Asel Murzakulova, Dr Sanjar Sadyrov, Dr Vitalii Zaginaev, and Prof. Denis Samyn, alongside experts from the Kazakh Institute of Ecology and Geoecology, Aga Khan Foundation Tajikistan, Suleyman Demirel University, and Kazakh National Medical University.

The workshop gathered more than 50 in-person and 40 online participants, including academics, researchers, and representatives of international and national organizations.
